Summer Movie Magic Part II: The Summer Strikes Back

Yes after much anticipation the sequel is here. If you need a refresher check out Summer Movie Magic Part I before continuing. After my magical summer of 89’ I got to convince my parents to let go to more movies as I was older now and started taking more of an interest. However my visits to the theater were still few and far between especially during the summer months.

Enter the summer of 1993. During this particular summer I spent a good portion of it in Mobile, Alabama staying with my aunt and cousins. This summer there was only one movie that I wanted to see more than anything Jurassic Park. Being inundated with previews, behind the scenes and movie magic specials I was particularly looking forward to this movie. I wanted to see a Tyrannosaurus Rex in action.
In anticipation I got to read the book it was based off of in school in the off chance that I would once again be disappointed and not get to see the film in theaters. Fortune smiled upon me and gave me my opportunity. My older sisters and cousins wanted to go see a movie. They wanted to go see Jason Goesto Hell: The Final Friday
There was no way in hell I was going to go watch that movie. I was not a big fan of horror/slasher films as a matter of fact I was afraid of them back then. My little brother felt the same way. I noticed in those same listings that Jurassic Park was playing at a similar time. I convinced my aunt to let my brother and me go see that instead. My cousin Kurt decided to join us because he wanted to see it as well.
So the stage is set my older cousins and sisters would go watch Jason Goes to Hell and my cousin, my brother and I are off to watch Jurassic Park. In usual fashion for my family we get to the theater late and by the time we get tickets the movie has started. Fortunately for us all we missed were the previews I couldn’t tell you if my sisters missed anything and could care less if they did to be honest. As soon as we settled in my attention was already grabbed on screen.
The piercing sound of the velociraptor gave me chills as I sat on the edge of my seat in anticipation. Although I didn’t realize it at the time my love affair with film sound had begun. Jurassic Park would not have had the effect on me that it did without the beautiful sound effects and score accompanying it. For a wonderful 90 minutes I felt like dinosaurs once again roamed the earth.
Now if you noticed I said 90 minutes of wonder however Jurassic Park clocks in at 127 minutes. Well apparently Jason Goes to Hell only had a run time of 87 minutes so after the movie was done my sister came to find us and tell us it was time to go. I didn’t want to leave we had just gotten past the iconic scene where the T-Rex shows up and for the first time and reeks havoc.
The bass from its footsteps and ferocity of its roar had me on the edge of my seat. After the thrill of the initial chase you want to tell me that I have to leave? I was not happy at all. I was pretty pissed to be honest. So I had to leave the movie unfulfilled. This was not the end of the story for me. Upon returning home I realized the movie was still playing in theaters at home.
I skillfully persuaded my mom into letting my brother and I go see it since I was old enough. Round 2 this time we arrived on time to see the previews as well as the movie. Although I had seen the majority of the movie already I still found myself on the edge of my seat with every earth rumbling step and ear piercing scream.
It was an awesome thrill ride. It helped to cement Steven Spielberg as my all time favorite director. He is truly a master of suspense. It’s a title that I seek to attain in my career as I press forward. You would think this was the point where I wanted to become a filmmaker. This is not the case. At this time I really became engrossed with video games and decided that I drop the desire to become a lawyer and instead work in the gaming world. The factors that finally led to my current path are still forthcoming in the next installment. Stay tuned.
