I’ve become very
familiar with TED talks since I’ve started school. On occasion I will sit and
watch a speech or two to gain a new perspective or to find new inspiration.
Sir Ken Robinson’s talk is my all time favorite. If you haven’t seen it I advise
that you give it a look. It’s well worth your time.
However today I
decided to watch James Cameron’s talk. I’ve always admired James Cameron
because he’s always pushing the boundaries of technology on the screen to be
able to create new worlds. He talked about how he grew up reading science
fiction and just being immersed in that world. Growing up in an age with no
video games or cg he talked about how he had to use his imagination to create
the images for his mental screen. It was his source (so to speak) for his
future work on the screen. He’s stayed in the realm of science fiction for most
of his films.
I can definitely
relate to this. When I was younger I was always reading something and using my
imagination to visualize the words on the page in my head. He also used
film making as a way to marry two of his worlds in the fact that he enjoyed the
world of science and telling stories.
The reason he gave
for wanting to make the film Titanic was especially amusing to me. All he
really wanted was an excuse to setup an expedition to go down and visit the
wreck of the Titanic. The fact that he was able to achieve this feat gives me
heart because there are a few places I want to go and a few things that I would
like to do. I planned on using some of my films to help me achieve some of
those personal goals as well.
