As the summer wraps up heading into Labor Day weekend can I
just say that it has been an awesome year for movies so far. I remember
salivating over the releases slated for this year last year during this time. With the wealth of promising releases I could see the famine that the 2007-2008 Writers Strike had caused for features had ended Those movies have held up to
their promise (well except Battleship it had potential but didn’t deliver).
This has truly been a year of fun.
I
enjoyed the slate of movies from 2011.
Super 8 however was the only movie that I felt like a kid again (once
again kudos Mr. Abrams). Fast forward to 2012 and there are 4 movies that
achieved that effect John Carter, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Expendables 2(it was 5 actually but Star Wars is a rerelease). I suspect that number
may increase by the end of the year with Skyfall still on the horizon.
I take
this as a good sign because unlike some of my fellow colleagues I see a lot
potential still in Hollywood. There are still a lot of great movies that are
being made. I can’t count how many times I’ve been re-energized when I stepped
out of the theater this year. More so than ever 2012 has kept me focused.
Seeing and feeling the crowd’s reaction reminds me why I wake up everyday
pursing my insane fantasy. I have plenty of material to absorb. I’m sure the
influence will show in one form or another.
This year has set the bar pretty
high. I’ve seen excellence. I’ve felt the potential. I’ve experienced disappointment.
I will remember this year for all that has transpired on screen. It will be
locked away in my memories as have the summers of the past.
